Read the new EMODnet Chemistry-based paper: Data quality and FAIR principles applied to marine litter data in Europe
2 October 2021

Since the end of September the scientific article Data quality and FAIR principles applied to marine litter data in Europe has been available on the online magazine Marine Pollution Bulletin and its issue in Volume 173, Part A is expected for December 2021.

This publication is based on the experience of marine litter data management gained by EMODnet Chemistry and exhaustively explains the main steps needed to format, validate and publish data following the FAIRness of the litter data. Numerous examples on how quality, complexity and heterogeneity has been managed enrich the paper, such as the demanding processing of data from citizen science initiatives acquired without consolidated protocols.

In conclusion, the authors from Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) and Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (Ifremer) state that “The dialogue with other ongoing projects dealing with related topics or active systems from other regions can facilitate a framework for a global monitoring strategy. This possibility could lead to the quantification of the litter in the oceans facing the cross borders nature of this environmental topic.”

The article is also available on the EMODnet Chemistry portal>Publications.
