G20 Marine Litter Workshop, 2020: EMODnet Chemistry among the participants

The restricted on line meeting G20 Workshop on harmonized monitoring and data compilation of marine plastic litter has been organised by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), on September 7th, 2020.

The workshop has been thought to face a fundamental problem to reduce marine plastic litter and microplastics on a global scale: the lack of a globally compiled monitoring data and a worldwide network for data sharing.

EMODnet Chemistry has been invited to share and discuss the EU achievements on marine litter data management on a large scale by means of the European Marine Observation and Data Network.

All details on the event are available in the G20 Workshop report, including the Agenda and the Minutes.

MOEJ has conducted several projects and international expert meetings for harmonization and standardization of the methods since 2016.

Hereafter some milestones:

  • 2015 - G7 Elmaus Summit to further advance science-based measures
The harmonization and standardization of monitoring methods were listed as priority measures.
  • 2019 - G20 Ministerial Meeting on Energy Transitions and Global Environment for Sustainable Growth
G20 Implementation Framework for Actions on Marine Plastic Litter calls for the promotion of harmonized monitoring methods.
  • 2019 - Follow-up meeting of the abovementioned framework
The MOEJ took a lead in harmonized monitoring and data compilation.
  • 2019 - G20 Osaka summit
The Osaka Blue Ocean Vision: reducing additional pollution by marine plastic litter to zero by 2050 through a comprehensive life-cycle approach.

As a result of these efforts, MOEJ released Guidelines for Harmonizing Ocean Surface Microplastic Monitoring Methods in May 2019, and its revision in June 2020.

The event has been reserved for G20 member states, countries and regions sharing the Osaka Blue Ocean Vision, selected experts, and international organizations.
